Our Story

TL; DR Version

👋 Hi, I'm Gary!

I created ABC AI specifically for creatives like you and me.

Like you, I've always been a creator. From storytelling, product design and software to woodworking and more, I've always set my sights on creating something new, unique and easy to use that solves nagging real-world problems.

Even as a kid, I somehow believed I had all of the resources around me to build anything I could imagine. Maybe it was because my dad collected tools like kids collect Pokémon cards and piled our garage chock-full of them plus loads of random junk—stuff no one would miss when I drug it away and wrapped it in duct tape. Or maybe it was because my family instilled in me helpfulness to others as a core value.

Either way, I'm grateful it led me here to you, and that you've found your way to ABcro.ai.

While my career journey makes the most sense in the world to me, some find its arc from journalism to AI software development a bit "non-traditional." 🤣

I got my first taste of the professional communications at a small weekly newspaper, followed by a less small daily paper. The job was to immerse myself into a topic I knew almost nothing about—usually for a brief time, no matter how boring it seemed on the surface—and draw out a compelling story such that my writing could serve readers as a substitute for being there themselves.

I must admit, looking back, it was pretty romantic—and not just the allure of interviewing five Grammy winners—but the responsibility, nobility of being an objective voice, trusted to deliver the action while abstracting himself from it. It was ultimately the grind of evening city council meetings and renting in the 3-figure-a-month district of a small south Georgia town that did in my journalism career.

My 25-year-old self had "bigger" aspirations, which led me to copywriting, then marketing management, then MarTech and CRM product development for large corporations.

Before I knew it, I was buying, implementing and optimizing enterprise-level MarTech software stacks for tens of millions of monthly active users.

To me, I was just having fun creating cool and useful stuff. Until one day I looked up and realized people saw me as an expert in marketing automation, A/B testing, conversion rate optimization and communications product development.

That was about the time I opened my first marketing and copywriting agency called The Copywriter Factory, where I built a (very) small book of clients, a few I still work with today. (Side note: Stay tuned for a completely reimagined Copywriter Factory coming soon! It'll be radically different from how it started. And, yes, there will be AI. 🤗)

Not long after starting my marketing communications agency, I was presented with an opportunity to join a large enterprise, where I was exposed to deeply personalized machine learning recommendations systems that blew my mind. I became convinced I could never compete with the large-scale corporate world of messaging. So I all but closed up my agency and embraced the corporate worklife full-time.

Fast-forward to late 2022. I was in my dream job overseeing an (NLP) natural language processing-based conversational AI product (aka a chatbot).

In November that year, a little-known company called OpenAI launched a product they dubbed ChatGPT.

From inside the world of AI software development, I saw my field of study rapidly revolutionize the course of our universe forever.

Less than a year later, I was without a job.

Many people working in conversational AI at the time saw ChatGPT as a threat. I remember a marketing exec summoning me and the director of AI to explain how gen AI works—then asking us to write up a one-pager that downplays its relevance and utility in our market.

It didn't feel good—or correct.

Meanwhile, I argued to the contrary. Gen AI was an enormous gift—like the airplane was to transportation. I made the case that it propelled our field into mainstream ubiquity. That soon everyone would use it. That if we could harness the opportunity—quickly, responsibly and with our access to vast live datasets that no gen AI could ever get its hands on—we could use it to leap ahead of the competition, become the dominant market player. and help tens of millions of people lead happier, healthier lives.

The business chose another strategy.

One morning, the company informed me that my dream job working for a $220MM MarTech AI startup was eliminated—along with about 100 others as it turned out—because its funding couldn't cover our paychecks.

Long story short, that company slashed its AI roadmap; divested itself of meaningful data integrations; gutted its product and engineering staff; and doubled down on replicating CRM features a blind man's dart could find in any Gartner quadrant.

That's when I created ABC AI ... and the rest is history in the making.

At ABC AI (including ABcro.ai, ABcrm.ai and ABlab.ai coming soon), we take the once-radical but rapidly growing perspective that AI-infused CRM and marketing automation software is now a business commodity. It should be just as easy to run A/B tests, deploy AI chatbots or send 1-1 personalized marketing communications as it is to sum a column in a spreadsheet, send a business email or communicate live on camera with a colleague across continents.

It's the knowledge of how to implement your CRM, the data you pipe in, the insights you get out, the creativity with which you wield its power, and the people who breathe it with life—that's where your CRM can make a real difference in your business today..

That's where I can help.

And that's why we offer our world-class ABcrm AI software—100% FREE—to all of our ABcro agency clients.

Whether you use ABcrm or one of the other great CRMs on the market, we're here to help you create your best business—working from your customer data backwards..

Cheers,

P.S. Serious talk: I hope you'll give me a chance to show you why my ABcrm.ai is actually (no offense) better than yours—PLUS a half dozen other software vendors you subscribe to every month.

ABcrm offers the first simple-to-use CRM that covers the full breadth of your customer experience. Many before me have said that. I think we've actually achieved it. Think as comprehensive as Salesforce and Hubspot, as powerful and easy-to-use as Braze, and as cost-effective as Active Campaign and MailChimp. I've used them all. But, please, don't simply believe or disbelieve me. Judge for yourself ...

From open calendar scheduling, conditional forms, A/B testing, marketing funnels and surveys to document signing, learning management, digital and physical product sales, reputation management, our handy all-in-one messaging inbox that I use every day 🔥 (even for my personal channels), bulk social scheduling and more—we have it ALL! All natively in the platform. All infused with profit-boosting AI features. All at a fraction of the cost of the half dozen vendors that make up your Zapped-out MarTech stack.

Imagine the possibilities of your customer data being in just one place for once—it's like Nirvana for marketers! 🤘

P.P.S. Are you in healthcare? Did I mention ABcrm.ai is HIPAA compliant, too?! 🥼

CPO, CMO, COO

I worked with Gary on Messaging Center project back in 2018-2020. [It] was a complex multi-quarter project which was a brand new feature but yet requires strong synergies among multiple systems including email, safety & trust, mobile apps and desktop solutions. Gary ... defined the vision, collaborated product, business, and technology teams to build consensus, and pulled this product from a high level business idea into a concrete product within a timely manner. I was very fortunate to work with him.

Quite frankly Gary Grimes is the finest copywriter I know. A lot goes into that word, finest, from the quality of his work, to the accessibility of his writing, to the speed at which he completes it. Mr. Grimes is a consummate promoter, able to quickly consider his topic, fully comprehend it, and then promote it beautifully in a timely manner.

I've recommended Gary before, but man, after looking back at some of his old work on our site on the Wayback Machine, I have to recommend him again. The guy has a level of spark in his promotional copy that you just don't find very often. I know this—I've worked with and trained many dozens of copywriters. Gary is very close to the top of the heap. He can take a direct route to the close with a deft, inspiring respect for the buyer that I don't think I've seen elsewhere.

I highly recommend Gary for website development. He was a pleasure to work with and understood my needs perfectly. He was also willing to provide quick fixes as needed.
